Does Kahlua Have Coffee (or Caffeine) In It?

When it comes to creamy liqueurs like Bailey's Irish Cream and Rumchata, there's always the lingering question of what, exactly, is in them. Is there really cream? How much rum? Is there coffee in them? The list goes on.

(For the record, neither of those contain any coffee.)

But when it comes to Kahlua, we tend to think we have a pretty good handle on things: coffee, rum, sugar, vanilla… and that's about it. I mean, what else do you need in life?

What is Kahlua?

Kahlua is a coffee liqueur with a distinctive taste and aroma. It is made from a blend of 100% Arabica coffee beans, sugar cane, and vanilla beans. The coffee beans are grown in the mountains of Veracruz, Mexico, where the drink was invented and is still produced.

Is There Caffeine in Kahlua?

The short answer is yes, there is caffeine in Kahlua. However, the amount of caffeine in Kahlua is very low when compared to a cup of coffee—about 5mg of caffeine per shot.

To compare, a cup of coffee has about 95mg of caffeine. Quite a difference.

So while Kahlua may give you a slight energy boost—depending on how much you're indulging in it—it's not likely to make you feel very alert (or focused).

Some people mix Kahlua and coffee, which does increase the caffeine content. But if you're looking for a caffeine boost... Well, you might want to stick to your regular cup of java.

Fortunately for people who want more caffeine, Kahlua has actually already made Kahlua flavored coffee—in many different flavors. From original Kahlua, to mocha, to peppermint mocha, to hazelnut, to french vanilla, to salted caramel—takes a deep breath—to White Russian, Black Russian, Mudslide, and Espresso Martini!

That's a lot of flavors. So if you love coffee and the delicious taste of Kahlua, these flavored coffees are definitely worth trying. Just don't drink them as a nightcap, or you might be up all night.

Is There Alcohol in Kahlua Flavored Coffee?

Nope! Well, not if you're going to buy Kahlua Flavored Coffee. If you mix Kahlua and coffee at home, yes, it definitely will have alcohol.

But just like Jim Beam's Bourbon flavored coffee, Kahlua flavored coffee is non-alcoholic, meaning you can drink it at any time of day (including the morning) and not get drunk or even buzzed.

So, yes. Rest assured, you can enjoy Kahlua Flavored Coffee to your heart's content without worrying about getting tipsy. But you may have to explain to your boss why you're drinking what smells like a Mudslide at the 9 AM meeting.

Takeaways
